The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced the commencement of repair works on disrupted undersea internet connection cables that recently impacted internet services in the country.
In an update, the NCA stated that the repair of the Submarine Cable Service Providers for South Atlantic Telecommunication Cable 3 (SAT-3) will commence today. SAT-3 anticipates completing the repair works by the second week of April, provided there are no unforeseen delays.
Additionally, the remaining three providers, including African Coast to Europe (ACE), West Africa Cable System (WACS), and Main One, are scheduled to arrive at the damaged site by April 8 after jointly deploying a repair vessel on March 24.
The NCA mentioned that the restoration of the cables is expected to be finalized by May 9, 2024, with ACE repairs anticipated to conclude by April 17, WACS by April 28, and Main One by May 9. However, the Authority cautioned that these dates are subject to change, and updates will be provided in case of any new developments.
SAT-3 is a crucial submarine communications cable that connects Portugal and Spain to South Africa, with connections to several West African countries along the route. Main One Cable and the West Africa Cable System (WACS) are other submarine communications cables that link various countries in West Africa to Portugal and South Africa. The Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable system serves 24 countries across Europe, South Africa, and the west coast of Africa with its optical-fibre submarine cable network.
