70,000 smart tablet distributed details below
The Ministry of Education has begun distributing smart tablets to Senior High School (SHS) students nationwide, following the launch of the Ghana Smart Schools Project (GSSP) by President Nana Akufo-Addo in March.
According to Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, approximately 70,000 smart tablets have already been distributed to 30 of the 450,000 targeted schools in the project's first phase. The distribution is managed by an automated system that ensures only students registered in the Senior High School Secretariat database receive the tablets. Each tablet is assigned a serial number to ensure that it is used by the intended student.
The schools that have received the smart tablets so far include Opoku Ware School, Bosomtwe Girls, OLA SHS at Kenyasi, St. James SHS, Bosomtwe STEM Academy, Osei Adutwum SHS, Wesley Girls’ SHS, Abomosu STEM, Mamfe Methodist SHS, Achimota SHS, Applied Technology Institute, Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC), Awaso STEM, Kpasenkpe SHS, and OIC. Other recipients are Aburi Girls SHS, Nyakrom Senior High Technical School, St. Augustine’s College, Ghana Senior High Technical School, Ahantaman Girls’ SHS, Tarkwa SHS, Accra Academy, Mawuli School, Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS, Worawora SHS, Damongo SHS, Nandom SHS, Bolga Girls’ SHS, Notre Dame Girls’ SHS, and Koase Senior High Technical School.
Dr. Adutwum noted that IT personnel involved in the distribution have been trained to ensure efficient delivery from headquarters to schools. A tracking system has been implemented to monitor the tablets' activity, websites accessed, and location if stolen.
To support tablet maintenance, the Ministry of Education, in partnership with K.A. Technologies, has established 274 support centers nationwide, each staffed with at least three technicians.
The GSSP aims to equip students under the Free SHS policy with essential technical skills, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing education through technology. President Akufo-Addo announced plans to distribute 1.4 million smart tablets to schools across the country. These tablets feature a comprehensive learning management system that includes self-assessment tools, access to WAEC past questions, and blogging capabilities for student interaction.
Dr. Adutwum emphasized the importance of ICT-driven education in developing human resources capable of thriving in a technologically advanced era. He stated that providing students with digital skills will not only enhance academic performance but also accelerate the country's digitalization for socio-economic development.
Since 2017, President Akufo-Addo has demonstrated a commitment to educational reform through innovative policies. Dr. Adutwum highlighted that the President’s substantial investments in education will be remembered as his most significant legacy, urging all stakeholders to contribute to advancing Ghana’s educational system.
“We are making significant progress as a nation, and the statistics and learning outcomes since 2017 attest to the fact that we are heading in the right direction under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo,” he noted.
Additionally, Dr. Adutwum mentioned that the government is establishing new laboratories and renovating existing ones to support the implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
