Internet Outage: Undersea Cable Repairs Completed

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced the completion of repairs on four undersea cables that were damaged in March 2024.

The repairs began on March 29 at the crossing with the sub-sea canyon off the coast of Abidjan known as Le Trou Sans Fond Canyon and were completed on May 8, 2024.

In a press statement on May 22, the NCA reported that the repairs on the South Atlantic Telecommunication Cable 3 (SAT-3) were finished on April 6, the African Coast to Europe (ACE) on April 17, the West Africa Cable System (WACS) on April 29, and Main One on May 8.

"The National Communications Authority (NCA) wishes to inform the general public of the successful completion of repair works on all four subsea cables affected by the March 14 disruptions, which impacted mobile and fixed data services nationwide. The cables are now operational and have been providing service at full capacity since the completion of the repairs."

The NCA has since directed the Submarine Cable Service to submit their backup and redundancy plans to ensure business continuity and seamless connectivity to data services in case of future cable cuts or major faults.

Additionally, all Mobile Network Operators have been instructed to maintain their existing redundant submarine cable links within Ghana and to connect to a submarine cable provider in the sub-region that currently does not land in Ghana.

The internet disruption, which impacted data and Voice over IP (VoIP) services for various telecommunication companies in Ghana, began on Thursday, March 14.
