CETAG Strike Update: A Cry for Fairness
The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) is still on strike, and the situation remains unresolved. As a concerned member, I want to share the journey that led us here and the latest developments.
The Journey So Far
In 2021, CETAG began negotiating for better conditions, but the talks reached a deadlock. The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission intervened, issuing awards in May 2023 that didn't meet CETAG's expectations. A strike ensued in August 2023, with the Labour Commission promising government action by November 2023. Unfortunately, the government failed to deliver, leading CETAG to seek legal recourse.
Current State
Despite numerous efforts, CETAG's demands remain unmet. Final reminders and notices have been served, but the government has yet to act. The agreed-upon conditions, including an extra month's allowance, are still pending. As the general secretary of CETAG stated, "Tutors will continue performing office duties but won't return to classrooms until our demands are met."
Next Steps
CETAG will pursue legal action to compel the government to meet their demands. They urge the public to understand their position and support their efforts to improve teachers' welfare in the 46 Colleges of Education.
The Way Forward
The leaders of CETAG are considering whether to honor the Labour Commission's invitation on Thursday, June 27, 2024. As ASAMOAH ENOCK MORRIS, a concerned member from Accra College of Education, I urge everyone to stand in solidarity with CETAG and demand fairness for our teachers.
