 The country has established a detailed framework outlining the minimum qualifications required for teaching at various educational levels. This article provides an in-depth exploration of the teaching qualifications in Ghana, categorized by educational levels.


Basic Level (Primary, Kindergarten, and Junior High School)

To teach at the basic level, which includes primary schools, kindergartens, and junior high schools (JHS), the minimum qualification required is a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in primary education or a specific subject area relevant to JHS. In the past, a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) was accepted as a sufficient credential for teaching at this level.

However, with the evolving educational standards and the drive for improved quality of education, the DBE has become obsolete. The shift towards requiring a B.Ed ensures that teachers possess a deeper understanding and broader knowledge base in education and subject-specific content, enabling them to effectively deliver the curriculum and support student learning.


 Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

For those aspiring to teach at senior high schools (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, a higher qualification is necessary. A Bachelor's degree in secondary education with a specialization in a specific subject area is mandatory.


 This requirement ensures that teachers at this level have a strong foundation in their subject area, allowing them to provide specialized and in-depth instruction to their students. The focus on specialization is crucial as it prepares students for tertiary education or vocational careers, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge.


 Colleges of Education

Teaching at Colleges of Education, which are institutions responsible for training future teachers, requires even more advanced qualifications. To become a lecturer at these colleges, a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a subject area related to the lecturer's first degree is required. 


For example, an individual with a Bachelor of Education in Information Technology may pursue an MPhil or PhD in Information Technology or ICT. These advanced degrees ensure that lecturers possess a deep expertise in their subject areas and are capable of conducting research, contributing to academic knowledge, and providing high-quality teacher training.


 Universities and Technical Universities

At the highest level of education, teaching at universities and technical universities demands rigorous academic qualifications. The minimum requirement is an MPhil or PhD in a specific subject area. While the advanced degree does not necessarily have to be in the same subject as the first degree, it should be closely related.
