Press statement: Nationwide industrial action and dissolution of SSNIT Board

"The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) stands in unwavering solidarity with Organized Labour in their nationwide strike. We share a deep concern for the handling of SSNIT's investment interests and assets, which has led to a crisis of trust. The decision to sell hotels despite public outcry has exposed a lack of judgment and poor corporate governance skills by the SSNIT leadership. This move has not only eroded public trust but also demonstrated a blatant disregard for the sentiments and welfare of the broader populace.

We demand the immediate dissolution of the SSNIT Board and the resignation of top Management. Their involvement in this controversial transaction has shown a critical lapse in judgment and accountability. It is unacceptable that those responsible for managing our pension funds have prioritized personal interests over the welfare of workers and pensioners. We need fresh perspectives and leaders who prioritize transparency, accountability, and integrity to restore public trust.

UTAG also urges for greater participation of Organized Labour in SSNIT's management, free from government and political interference. It is crucial that workers and pensioners have a seat at the table when it comes to decision-making about their own funds. We must safeguard the interests of workers and pensioners and shield pension funds from political machinations. The current state of affairs, where political appointees dictate the direction of SSNIT, is unacceptable and must be addressed.

In this struggle, we stand united with Organized Labour, urging all stakeholders to acknowledge the gravity of the situation. We must collectively demand transparency, accountability, and integrity in managing our pension funds. The future of our members, workers, and pensioners depends on our ability to safeguard their interests. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to ensure that our pension funds are managed with the utmost care and responsibility.

As we embark on this nationwide strike, we do so with conviction that our actions will yield a better future for all. We won't stand idly by while workers' and pensioners' interests are compromised. We'll continue to mobilize, organize, and fight for our members' and the broader labour community's rights. We'll not be silenced or intimidated by those who seek to maintain the status quo.

Our support for the strike and demands for transparency and accountability in SSNIT management demonstrate our unwavering commitment to our members' and the labour community's welfare. We'll continue to stand in solidarity with Organized Labour until our demands are met, and workers' and pensioners' interests are safeguarded. We'll work tirelessly to ensure that our pension funds are managed with the transparency, accountability, and integrity that they deserve.

The UTAG's support for the nationwide strike and demands for transparency and accountability in SSNIT management are a testament to our unwavering commitment to the welfare of our members and the broader labour community. We'll continue to stand in solidarity with Organized Labour until our demands are met, and workers' and pensioners' interests are safeguarded. Together, we can create a better future for all."
