Protect Your Mobile Money: MTN Ghana Warns Against Using Predictable PINs

As mobile money fraud continues to rise, MTN Ghana is sounding the alarm, urging Mobile Money (MoMo) users to safeguard their accounts. During the recent anti-mobile money fraud campaign in Accra, MTN Ghana emphasized the importance of creating strong MoMo PIN codes to prevent fraud.

Using easily guessable information like your date of birth or mobile phone number as your MoMo PIN is a recipe for disaster. Fraudsters can quickly access your account if they get hold of your phone.

Rena Ankrah, Manager for AML-CFT and Head of Fraud at MTN Ghana, cautioned, "Using your date of birth or mobile number as your PIN makes it easier for fraudsters to access your account... We strongly advise using more secured MoMo PIN codes."

Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, employing advanced tactics to deceive customers. Ankrah warned, "Fraudsters are using advanced methods... Our customers must understand the risks." One common scam involves tricking customers into believing they've won an award from MTN.

However, MTN only contacts prize winners through official company numbers, requiring them to visit the nearest office to claim their prizes.

To protect yourself:

1. Create strong, unique MoMo PIN codes.

2. Avoid using easily guessed information (date of birth, mobile number).

3. Be cautious of unfamiliar numbers contacting you.

4. Verify MTN communications through the official number: 0244300000.

The "MTN MoMo Fraud Roadshow" campaign marks MTN Ghana's 15th Anniversary of Mobile Money. This initiative demonstrates MTN's dedication to securing customer transactions and preventing fraud. Ankrah emphasized, "We aim to empower our customers with knowledge to protect their accounts."

Secure your MoMo account today. Choose a strong PIN, stay vigilant, and report suspicious activities.
