NTC Exams: Examination Offences and Their Penalties by the National Teaching Council

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has clear rules regarding the conduct of exams. Below is a simple guide to the offences and penalties associated with breaking these rules.

 1. Leakage of Examination Questions

  Offence: Having access to or sharing exam questions before the exam.

 Penalty: You will be handed over to the police and your results will be canceled. You’ll need to retake the exam a year later.


 2. Possession of Unauthorized Material

Offence: Bringing items like notes, phones, or programmed calculators into the exam hall.

 Penalty: Your paper will be canceled, and you’ll have to rewrite it in the next exam session.

 3. Copying or Stealing Exam Scripts

 Offence: Copying from notes or a classmate’s paper, or tampering with other candidates' scripts.

Penalty: Your paper will be canceled, and you’ll need to rewrite the exam later.


 4. Looking Over Other Candidates’ Papers

Offence: Peeking at other candidates' answers ("giraffing").

Penalty: For the first offence, you’ll sign a bond, but if you do it again, your paper will be canceled.

 

5.  Impersonation

Offence: Pretending to be someone else or letting someone else take the exam for you.

Penalty: You will be dismissed, prosecuted, and may be banned for two years.


6. Assisting or Receiving Assistance

Offence: Helping others or getting help during the exam.

Penalty: Your paper will be canceled, and you’ll need to rewrite the exam in the next session.


7.Using Unauthorized Devices

Offence: Using phones, calculators, or other devices during the exam.

Penalty: Your paper will be canceled, and you’ll retake the exam during the next session.

8. Disturbing Other Candidates

Offence: Distracting others in the exam hall.

 Penalty: You will be stopped from continuing the exam.


9. Verbal or Physical Assault

Offence: Threatening or physically assaulting supervisors or invigilators.

Penalty: You’ll be banned from exams for one or two years, depending on the severity of the offence.

 

10. Bringing Harmful Substances

Offence: Bringing anything harmful into the exam hall with the intent to hurt others.

Penalty: Your paper will be canceled, and you’ll face prosecution.

 

11. Destroying Evidence or Exam Materials

Offence: Destroying notes, calculators, or exam materials.

Penalty: Your paper will be canceled, and you’ll be banned for two years.


12. Writing After the Exam Has Ended 

Offence: Continuing to write after time has been called.

 Penalty: For the first time, you’ll get a caution. If it happens again, your paper will be canceled.


13. Frequent Breaks with Intent to Cheat

Offence: Frequently asking to leave the hall with the intent to cheat.

Penalty: You’ll get a caution at first, but for repeat offences, your paper will be canceled.


14. Not Writing Your Index Number

Offence: Failing to write your index number on your paper despite reminders.

Penalty: The first time, you’ll get a caution. If it continues, it will be seen as cheating.

 

15. Trying to Influence Examiners

Offence: Writing pleas in your answer booklet asking for better marks.

Penalty: Your paper will be canceled, and you’ll rewrite the exam in the next session.


16. Not Wearing a Face Mask

 Offence: Failing to wear a face mask during the exam (if required).

 Penalty: You’ll be asked to leave the exam hall, and your paper may be canceled if it continues.
