On October 10, 2024, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) began a nationwide strike. The strike was aimed at urging the government to take action against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

UTAG called for the government to ban mining activities in forest reserves, farms, and water bodies.

Galamsey has been severely affecting the environment, including water sources, farmlands, and wildlife, which, in turn, disrupts livelihoods, especially those of farmers.

As educators, UTAG members believe it is their responsibility to ensure future generations inherit a clean and healthy environment.

Throughout the strike, members across the country demonstrated their commitment by using various platforms to raise awareness about the harmful effects of galamsey.

Beyond this demand, UTAG also called for the revocation of a specific regulation (L.I. 2462), which they believe is insufficient to protect the forest reserves. They urged the government to strengthen its efforts to combat illegal mining.

Moreover, UTAG has taken an extra step by developing a "Pact for Candidates of the 2024 Presidential Election." This pact aims to secure commitments from presidential candidates to fight against galamsey and protect the environment for future generations. Discussions regarding this pact are already underway.

The strike has been impactful, showcasing UTAG’s dedication to addressing the pressing environmental issue of galamsey.

In response to their efforts, the National Executive Committee (NEC) has decided to suspend the strike action as of Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

However, members are asked to confirm whether they agree with this decision by Monday, October 28, 2024.

UTAG has expressed their gratitude to all members for their support during the strike and urged them to stay vigilant in the fight for a sustainable future for Ghana.

They also thanked other stakeholders who have stood by them in this cause.

UTAG’s efforts have shown the power of collective action in addressing national issues like illegal mining.

Their call for a cleaner environment and their engagement with political leaders highlight their commitment to the future of Ghana.

While the strike may be suspended, the fight against galamsey continues, and UTAG remains determined to secure a better future for the country.
