The Ghana Education Service (GES) has a structured ranking system with 13 distinct levels. Each rank has specific qualifications and responsibilities.

The Ranks in GES
Here is the list of ranks in GES, starting from the highest to the lowest:
- Director-General
- Deputy Director-General
- Director I

- Senior Superintendent I

- Pupil Teacher
Director-General
This is the highest rank in GES. The Director-General is appointed by the government and serves as the head of education affairs in Ghana. This position is based on political appointment rather than academic progression.
Deputy Director-General
The Deputy Director-General assists the Director-General in running GES. There are two Deputy Director-General positions:
- Access and Quality: Focuses on improving education quality and access.
- Management Services: Handles administrative and management duties.
Director I
This rank is achieved through years of service. Those at this level often serve as Divisional or Regional Directors of Education.

Director II
Similar to Director I, this rank requires long service. Individuals in this rank usually serve as District Directors, overseeing education in their districts.
Deputy Director
Deputy Directors assist District Directors in their duties. This rank is also obtained through long service.
Assistant Director I
Achieving this rank requires long service. Assistant Directors I may serve as Circuit Supervisors or heads of senior high schools.
Assistant Director II
This rank can be attained through:
- Promotion: After obtaining a Master’s or Ph.D. degree.
- Long service.
Individuals in this rank may lead basic schools.
Principal Superintendent
This rank is the entry point for those with a first degree. It is also the minimum qualification to teach in senior high schools and, more recently, in basic schools.

Senior Superintendent I
To attain this rank, individuals must work for four years as Senior Superintendent II.
Senior Superintendent II
This rank is the entry point for teachers with a diploma in education. It was previously the minimum qualification to teach in basic schools.
Superintendent I
This rank is earned after working for four years as a Superintendent II.
Superintendent II
This is the starting rank for Certificate A holders in GES.
Pupil Teacher
This is the entry-level rank for those with WASSCE, SSCE, or GCE qualifications. It also includes those who could not pass all their college courses before employment. In the past, such teachers were posted to schools before rewriting their failed papers. However, many never completed these resits.
How to Progress in GES
Progression in GES ranks often depends on:
- Long Service: Working in a rank for a specified number of years.
- Further Education: Attaining higher academic qualifications such as a Master’s or Ph.D.
- Examinations: Passing promotional exams organized by GES.
