Teacher trainees across the country are angry with the government for not paying their allowances for a whole semester.

This has caused serious problems for many students, especially Level 400 trainees who are currently doing their teaching internship.

These students say they are struggling to survive because they do not have enough money to take care of their basic needs like food, transportation, and rent.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has been telling Ghanaians during their campaigns that they restored and are paying all teacher trainee allowances. However, the trainees say this is not true.

According to them, they have not received their allowances for a full semester, and this is making life very difficult for them.

One frustrated trainee said, “They keep telling everyone they pay us, but we have not seen the money. We have to borrow or depend on others just to survive, especially those of us doing internships.”

Many trainees feel that the government does not care about their struggles. They believe the NPP government has failed to keep its promise to fully support teacher trainees. Some trainees have vowed to punish the government by voting against it in the December 7 elections.

“We will show the government that teacher trainees cannot be taken for granted. On election day, we will speak with our votes,” another trainee said.

The unpaid allowances have also affected the morale of teacher trainees. Instead of focusing on their training and teaching, they are constantly worried about money. They believe the government has not been fair to them and is only using their situation to score political points.

For now, teacher trainees are waiting to see if the government will pay the allowances before election day. If not, they say they will make their voices heard at the polls.
