CHASS Appeals for Urgent Release of Outstanding Funds to Schools

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has written to the Ministry of Education, requesting the urgent release of outstanding funds needed to run secondary schools across the country.

The letter, dated December 20, 2024, outlines the pressing financial challenges schools are facing as the reopening date of January 3, 2025, approaches.

Key Issues Highlighted by CHASS

1. Unsettled Recurrent Monies: Schools are yet to receive all the funds required for their day-to-day operations.

2. Arrears for Perishable Items: Payments owed for perishable food items remain unsettled, creating difficulties in planning meals for students.

3. Exclusion of Day and Single-Track Schools: Recent disbursements of funds appear to have left out day schools and single-track schools, putting them at a disadvantage.

4. Transportation Costs: Funds to cover transportation of food items from distribution centers to schools have not been provided, leading to increased logistical challenges.

5. Utility Bills: Many schools are struggling to settle essential utility bills, which poses a serious threat to smooth operations.

CHASS has urged the Ghana Education Service to prioritize the release of the following:

  • All outstanding recurrent funds.
  • Payments for perishable items, ensuring no exclusions for boarding schools.
  • Funds for transportation of food supplies.
  • Money to clear unpaid utility bills.

The letter warns that without these funds, school heads will face enormous challenges in reopening schools, managing daily activities, and ensuring the welfare of students. CHASS emphasizes that failure to release the funds before the reopening date could force schools to delay the resumption of the academic calendar.

The timely release of funds is crucial to ensure schools reopen smoothly and provide quality education. The appeal by CHASS highlights the need for urgent action to prevent disruptions to the education system and protect the well-being of students.

CHASS's call for immediate intervention reflects the pressing financial concerns of schools and the critical role of the

government in addressing these challenges.
