Many teacher trainees have been asking if H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the elected President, plans to cancel their allowances. This article seeks to address this concern and provide a clearer understanding of what might happen.

So far, Mahama has not officially announced the cancellation of trainee allowances. However, his proposed 30-point education policy includes plans that could indirectly affect the allowances.

Key Proposals in Mahama’s Education Policy

‘No-Academic-Fee’ Policy for First-Year Students
One of the main pledges in Mahama’s education plan is that all first-year students in public universities, colleges of education, and nursing schools will not pay academic fees during their first year. This includes students in teacher training colleges.

Financial Support for Continuing Students
Mahama plans to reintroduce and improve the Student Loan Trust Fund and offer scholarships. Trainees who currently receive allowances cannot access student loans. If loans become available to trainees, the allowances might be removed to make them eligible for the loan scheme.

Ending Mandatory National Service for Trainee Teachers
Mahama has promised to abolish the mandatory national service for teacher trainees introduced by the NPP. Graduates will be employed directly after completing their training.

Support for Teachers in Rural Areas
To encourage teachers to work in underserved areas, Mahama has pledged to introduce a 20% allowance based on the teacher’s basic salary. He also plans to provide teachers with housing in schools and help them acquire vehicles through flexible payment systems.

Financial Aid for Teachers and Nurses
Teachers and nurses will benefit from various financial support schemes, including allowances, scholarships, and loans, to make their careers more sustainable.

While there is no direct statement about cancelling trainee allowances, the possibility remains if Mahama’s government shifts its focus to loans and other financial support systems. Trainees should expect a restructured system of financial aid rather than the current monthly allowances.

As teacher trainees await clarity on the matter, it’s important to note that Mahama’s education policies aim to improve the overall welfare of students, teachers, and nurses. Whether these changes will be welcomed or criticized depends on how they are implemented.

Stay tuned for updates as more details emerge.
