The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has officially called off their strike, which began weeks ago. This is a huge relief for students, teachers, and other stakeholders in education.
Why the Strike Was Suspended
The leadership of CETAG stated three main reasons for suspending the strike:
Progress on Migration to University Salary Structure: The employer has shown goodwill by starting the process of moving college staff onto the University Salary Structure. This is part of the recommendations made by the National Labour Commission (NLC).

Unresolved Issues
While the strike has been called off, CETAG emphasized that some key issues are still unresolved. These include:
- All Year Round Work Compensation (AYRWC): Payment for additional work done in 2022 by staff in 42 colleges.
- Book and Research Allowance (2023/2024): Payment of arrears tied to an arbitral award granted by the NLC.
- BRA Top-Up Arrears (2022/2023): Outstanding payments for staff of Akrokerri College of Education.
- Non-Migration Issues: Some staff have been placed incorrectly in the migration process.

CETAG has assured its members that they will continue to push for the resolution of all outstanding issues. The association thanked its members for their patience and support throughout the strike. Members have been urged to return to work immediately.
The leadership also appreciated the efforts of key stakeholders such as the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).
CETAG remains committed to ensuring lasting peace within the Colleges of Education. They have promised to prioritize the welfare of their members and maintain productive engagement with all stakeholders.
For now, students and teachers are happy to get back to learning and teaching. It’s a fresh start for colleges of education, and all eyes will be on how both CETAG and the government work to prevent such situations from happening again.
