The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced an indefinite strike starting Thursday, 2nd January 2025. This decision was made during an emergency meeting on 30th December 2024 due to unresolved issues between CETAG and the government.

Reasons for the Strike

CETAG's leadership explained several reasons for their action:

  1. Failure to Follow Arbitration Ruling: The National Labour Commission (NLC) directed the government to resolve key issues back in May 2023, but this has not been done.
  2. Delay in Migration: The government has not completed the process of moving colleges of education staff to the same pay structure as university staff.
  3. Unpaid Salary Arrears: CETAG members are still waiting for their one-month salary arrears from 2022, which were promised as compensation.
  4. Unissued Appointment Letters: The government has delayed giving new appointment letters to staff, affecting their benefits and pay.
  5. Research Allowances: The research and book allowances for 2023 have not been paid.

CETAG’s Stance

CETAG has made it clear that its members will not return to the classroom until their demands are fully addressed. They believe the strike is a last resort to push for their rights, following several failed attempts to resolve the issues through dialogue.

What This Means

  • Classes and academic activities in colleges of education across Ghana will be disrupted.
  • Students may experience delays in their academic calendar.
  • The strike highlights the ongoing struggle of teachers to secure fair treatment and proper compensation for their work.
  • No supervision of project work and macro teaching for final year students

CETAG has called on local leaders and lecturers to stand firm in support of the strike, emphasizing that this action is lawful and in line with the Labour Act of Ghana.

Let’s hope both parties can come to an agreement soon to avoid further disruption in the education sector.
