The government of Ghana has appointed Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis as the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES). 



Before this role, he served as the Provost of the College of Education Studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Prof. Davis brings a wealth of experience and fresh ideas to improve education in Ghana.



He takes over from Dr. Eric Nkansah, who has been relieved of his duties as the Director-General of GES.




Academic Background

Prof. Davis is highly qualified in the field of education. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Monash University in Australia and a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education from Hiroshima University in Japan. 



He earned his Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Mathematics from UCC in 1999.



His hard work has earned him several prestigious awards, including:



  • Monash Graduate Scholarship (2007)
  • British Academy Visiting Scholar Award (2011)
  • Inter-Departmental Research Support Grant from UCC



Prof. Davis has held important leadership roles, such as serving as Vice-President of the Ghana Education Research Association in 2018. He is also an active member of various professional organizations, including:


  • Ghana Mathematics Society
  • Mathematics Association of Ghana (MAG)
  • World Education Research Association (WERA)
  • University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG)
  • Southern African Association of Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education (SAARMSTE)



Prof. Davis began his role as Provost of UCC’s College of Education Studies on August 1, 2022, with a tenure of three years. His appointment as the Director-General of GES reflects the government’s belief in his ability to address challenges in education and introduce innovative solutions.



Many are hopeful that his leadership will raise the standards of education and improve the quality of teaching and learning across Ghana.



Prof. Davis’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Ghana Education Service, and expectations are high for positive change.
